CFCyprus was founded in 1992 by Dr Ian Twinn, the Member of Parliament for Edmonton from 1983 to 1997.

The group was known as the ‘Conservatives for Cyprus’ until 2015 when it was rebranded as the ‘Conservative Friends of Cyprus’ and has held numerous events, the first of which was in Edmonton on 4 March 1992 with the then Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, The Lord Hurd of Westwell.

Subsequent events were held with the Rt Hon Malcolm Rifkind MP when he was Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs; the Rt Hon Michael Portillo when he was Secretary of State for Defence; and the Rt Hon Francis Maude MP when he was Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

The first Parliamentary Delegation to Cyprus was held in 1993 and consisted of Sir David Amess MP and Simon Burns MP, and former MPs Dr Ian Twinn, Keith Mans and Robert Brannock Jones.

CFCyprus has held an annual reception at the Conservative Party Conference since 1997.
