Sir Hugh Rossi 1927-2022

Sir Hugh Rossi 1927-2022

Nothing could have prepared him, or any of us, for the horrors of the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus in 1974. He was an Opposition spokesman at the time and was critical of Labour Government’s failure to meet their obligations to Cyprus as a Guarantor Power. Sir Hugh Rossi, Conservative Member of Parliament from 1966 until his retirement in 1992, a tireless campaigner, lawyer and a committed friend of Cyprus has died aged 92. When I joined him as a North London MP in 1983 he had already been in The House of Commons for 17 years and went on to serve for a total of 26 years. He was a kindly and deeply caring man who befriended us new boys, showed us the ropes and set us an example of serving our constituents. He freely shared his knowledge and experience with us all and helped us all to be effective in Parliament. He was a Minister under both Edward Heath and Margaret Thatcher, serving as Environment Minister, a Northern Ireland Minister and then Minister for Social Services and Disability. He was a practicing lawyer. He and his wife Philomena had a son and four daughters. His constituency of Hornsey, and from 1983, Hornsey and Wood Green, was deeply Cypriot. Geographically it included Green Lanes and the very many Cypriot businesses in the area. Perhaps because he too was a son of an immigrant, an Italian, he understood the hopes and needs of the Cypriot community in London. However, nothing could have prepared him, or any of us, for the horrors of the Turkish invasion and occupation of...

CFCyprus Annual Parliamentary Reception

On Wednesday the Conservative Friends of Cyprus hosted their annual New Year’s Vasilopita reception in the Jubilee Room in Parliament. At the reception the Minister for Europe Christopher Pincher confirmed that the British Government’s position regarding the Cyprus issue and Turkey’s activity within the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus does not change now that the UK has exited the European Union. Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Mr Pincher said: “Our stance remains the same, which is we believe that a bizonal, bicommunal system for the people of the island of Cyprus is the best way forward for peace and prosperity for them all; and we believe that Cyprus has a right to exclusive access to its Exclusive Economic Zone, and any drilling there by anybody is wrong. We deplore it and we continue to deplore it. We want to make sure that the hydrocarbons around Cyprus in the EEZ are used in the good of everybody on the island of Cyprus. It’s theirs, it’s yours, make the best use...

Europe Minister reaffirms UK’s committed support for Cyprus at Conservative Party conference

The Minister for Europe, the Rt Hon Christopher Pincher MP has stated that the British Government will continue supporting the efforts towards a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus issue. The minister’s statement followed yet another well-attended Conservative Friends of Cyprus reception at this year’s Conservative Party conference, which began on Sunday in Manchester. And you can be absolutely certain that the talks Alan Duncan, my predecessor, held a few years ago are talks that we want to continue with both sides, to make sure that this terrible, intractable difficult issue is resolved,” Pincher said at the event. The reception was opened with remarks by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs the Rt Hon Theresa Villiers MP, who also serves as the President of the Conservative Friends of Cyprus. Villiers promised to carry on being “a strong voice” for Cyprus both in the House of Commons and in the cabinet. She added that a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus issue is in the interest of both communities in the island. Having the Europe Minister next to her, she said that she would continue encouraging him and others in the government to engage “energetically and enthusiastically” in supporting the efforts to deliver a free and reunited...
