Cyprus marks 55th Independence Day

A message from David Burrowes MP, Parliamentary Chairman of CFCyprus, on Cyprus’ Independence Day:

“I congratulate the people of Cyprus on their 55th Independence Day today.

Cyprus is a valued friend of Britain and – as the Prime Minister, David Cameron, said in a recent meeting with President Anastasiades – Cyprus now has a real opportunity to reach an agreement that would be a great thing for Europe, a great thing for Cyprus and a great thing for the world.

Britain is one of Cyprus’ oldest and best friends, and we stand ready to help. The celebrations of independence will be complete if the whole island of Cyprus is truly free and independent following successful reunification negotiations.

As President Anastasiades said in his speech to the UN General Assembly this week, the aspiration is for peaceful co-existence which fully respects fundamental human rights and freedoms.

I am very much looking forward to meeting with representatives of the Cypriot Government when I lead a delegation of MPs to the island in November.”

CFCyprus will be hosting it’s annual reception at the Conservative Party Conference on Sunday 4th October from 5:45 to 7:00pm in the Wyvern Bar of the Midland Hotel, Manchester. For more information see:
