Our History

CFCyprus was founded 30 years ago in 1992 by Dr Ian Twinn CBE, Member of Parliament for Edmonton (1983 to 1997). Our launch event was in March 1992 with then Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, The Lord Hurd of Westwell.

Active in the 1990s, numerous events were held, including with the Rt Hon Malcolm Rifkind MP (Foreign Secretary), the Rt Hon Michael Portillo MP (Defence Secretary), and the Rt Hon Francis Maude MP (Shadow Foreign Secretary).

The first of our Parliamentary delegations to Cyprus was hosted in 1993 and included Sir David Amess MP, Simon Burns MP, Dr Ian Twinn MP, Keith Mans MP and Robert Brannock Jones MP.

CFCyprus has held an annual reception at the Conservative Party Conference since 1997, welcoming the Foreign Secretary and / or Minister for Europe as the keynote speaker.
