The entire team at the Conservative Friends of Cyprus express their sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Sir David Amess MP for their tragic and immensely saddening loss.

Sir David was a community champion - not just for his constituents but for countess important causes - helping make a positive impact in the lives of many. As the Prime Minister said, he was one of the kindest, nicest and most gentle people in politics. For all of us who knew him, his sudden and tragic death, at the hands of extremism, is painful and hard to comprehend.

He was a valued friend of Cyprus and the British Cypriot community, campaigning and calling for justice for the island and its people - throughout his parliamentary career. Amongst British Cypriots, Sir David was a well-known, respected, and popular parliamentarian - having helped many during his four decades of public service.

Sir David joined us on our first parliamentary visit to Cyprus in 1993, and we had the pleasure of hosting him again on delegation we hosted to the island in 2015, where he expressed his deep desire for peace and unity for the island, and delighted us all with his good company and humour.

He will be sorely missed by all of us who knew and worked with him.

May he rest in peace, and memory be eternal.
